Paris location questions, and how to ask them yourself

50 worked map questions for Paris, each showing the census and map fields it weighs, its limits, and a live map link you can change.

How to use these

Each entry below is one question turned into a map query. It names the fields it weighs and why, shows the areas that come out on top with their real measured values, and states what the data cannot tell you. The link at the end opens that exact query on the Paris map with the weights already set, so you can change a weight, swap a field, or draw your own area and get a different answer.

None of these are the “right” query. They are starting points chosen to show which fields exist for Paris and how combining them changes what you can honestly say.

Which Paris areas have many residents but few bank branches?

Resident count against mapped bank and credit-union presence — a coverage gap index

In Paris, the highest-ranking areas are Saint-Fargeau (Paris 20e Arrondissement), Villette (Paris 19e Arrondissement) and Charonne (Paris 20e Arrondissement). Saint-Fargeau (Paris 20e Arrondissement) leads with a score of 76.7/100 across 50 blocks, where the data shows ≈59 bank or credit unions nearby and ≈171,293 residents (total population). Each area is a cluster of high-scoring blocks within a 1,200 m radius.

How this query was built

Residents scored up and mapped branches scored down. The result ranks areas where the resident base is large relative to how many branches are mapped there — a rank blend, not a residents-per-branch ratio.

Total populationhigher55%Published resident count — the local demand base.
bank or credit union competitionlower45%Count of mapped bank and credit-union branches, scored inverted.

What this can’t tell you

A thin mapped presence is not proof that an area has no banking access: La Poste counters, ATMs inside shops and branches just over the boundary are not counted. It also ignores online banking entirely.

Try changing it

  • · Raise the branch weight to prioritise areas with the least presence.
  • · Swap banks for pharmacies or grocery stores to test another category.

All of these are adjustable on the Paris map on the Free Tier.

How this query was built

What this can’t tell you

Accommodation records do not include most short-let apartments, which are a very large part of Paris's supply, so a low count is not a low bed count. Nothing here reflects zoning, licensing or planning restrictions.

Try changing it

  • · Raise the accommodation weight to prioritise the thinnest supply.
  • · Drop the transit term to rank on attraction density alone.

All of these are adjustable on the Paris map on the Free Tier.

How this query was built

The published poverty rate scored up and mapped grocery presence scored down. It ranks districts where a low-income household profile and thin mapped food retail coincide.

Poverty rate (60% threshold)higher55%Published share of households under the 60%-of-median poverty threshold.
grocery store competitionlower45%Count of mapped grocery stores, scored inverted so thin presence ranks higher.

What this can’t tell you

Mapped grocery records miss markets, small independents and delivery entirely, so a thin count is not evidence that residents cannot buy food locally. This is a mapped-presence gap, nothing stronger.

Try changing it

  • · Widen the supply term to all retail to see whether the gap is grocery-specific.
  • · Add walkable street length to see how reachable the existing shops are.

How this query was built

Three signals: how many people are around, how walkable the streets are, and how many of this business type are already mapped there. The last is scored inverted, so an area ranks high when demand signals are strong and existing presence is thin.

What this can’t tell you

How this query was built

Two published readings of the same households: the middle of the income distribution and the share below the national poverty threshold. Ranking both up finds districts that are well off on average yet still contain a substantial low-income population — the mixed districts a single field hides.

What this can’t tell you

It cannot identify which households are which, and it is not a measure of segregation: a mixed district and two adjacent uniform ones can produce similar values at this resolution.

How this query was built

The two ends of the published distribution, scored against each other: a high 9th decile ranks up and a high 1st decile ranks down, so districts where the top runs far ahead of the bottom rise to the top of the list. Both fields come from the same table over the same households.

FieldRanks higher whenWeightWhy it’s here

What this can’t tell you

Deciles describe the shape of a distribution, not the number of households in it. Nor does the spread say anything about why it exists — a student district and a mixed-tenure district can produce the same gap.

Try changing it

  • · Switch to the Gini index for a single-number summary of the same idea.

How this query was built

The published age band alongside mapped pharmacy count. Ranking both up shows where an older resident base and existing pharmacy presence coincide; scoring the pharmacy term down instead turns the same recipe into a coverage question.

What this can’t tell you

Nothing about health, prescriptions or care needs, and a pharmacy record carries no size or opening hours. French pharmacy locations are also regulated by a numerus clausus, so presence reflects licensing as much as demand.

Try changing it

  • · Invert the pharmacy term to find older areas with the thinnest pharmacy presence.
  • · Swap the age band for 80 and over.

How this query was built

FieldRanks higher whenWeightWhy it’s here

Try changing it

  • · Compare with the 65-79 age band to see where the two readings diverge.

What this can’t tell you

How this query was built

INSEE defines an immigrant as a person born a foreign national outside France, whatever their nationality today. It is a birth-and-nationality status that never changes, which is why it is published separately from current nationality.

FieldRanks higher whenWeightWhy it’s here
Immigranthigher100%Published count of residents born a foreign national abroad — INSEE's immigrant definition, independent of current nationality.

What this can’t tell you

It is not the same as the count of foreign nationals and is not its complement: an immigrant who has acquired French nationality appears here and in the French-nationality count. Nothing about language, origin country or arrival date.

Try changing it

  • · Compare with the foreign-national count to see how the two definitions differ on the ground.
  • · Add retail venues to see where the profile and mapped shops coincide.

All of these are adjustable on the Paris map on the Free Tier.

How the scoring works

Every query ranks Paris block by block on the fields it names, combines those ranks into a 0–100 score using the weights shown, then groups the highest-scoring blocks into areas. Sources: INSEE Filosofi 2021. Because the score is a blend of ranks rather than a ratio, it tells you how areas compare with each other — not how many of anything there are per resident.

Each block is scored as a weighted percentile rank over available signals, renormalised by data coverage, rescaled to 0-100; blocks are H3 resolution 9 hexagons. Areas were formed with the score cluster engine at a 1.2 km radius, keeping the 5 strongest. Change the radius on the map to widen or tighten them.

Areas are only ranked where the thing being measured could actually exist, so a gap search cannot present empty parkland as an opportunity. Shops, homes and offices need a building; transit stops, EV chargers and bike docks only need a street or path. Anywhere the measure is already present counts as a candidate by definition.

Dating the numbers

  • Filosofi combines tax and social records for the 2021 fiscal year; figures describe that year as a whole rather than a single day.
  • Places, buildings and transportation come from a dated Overture release. A place record means the venue is mapped, not that it is licensed, open, or of any particular size.
  • INSEE Filosofi 2021 is a single vintage, so nothing here describes growth, decline or any change over time.
  • “Mean standard of living” is computed by this pipeline from published components; the publisher does not release it directly.
  • Counted as residents aged 65–79 on 31 December 2021, the INSEE Filosofi 2021 reference date. Those residents are older now; census age bands are never rolled forward, because people move in, move away and die, and the published band cannot be re-aged without a full cohort model.
  • Counted as residents aged 18–24 on 31 December 2021, the INSEE Filosofi 2021 reference date. Those residents are older now; census age bands are never rolled forward, because people move in, move away and die, and the published band cannot be re-aged without a full cohort model.

How far each answer can be pushed

Each question is labelled with a tier. The tier caps what the answer may claim, whatever the numbers say.

  • T4This is a ranking of places, not a measurement of people. The signals it combines are counted in different universes — the data contains no table crossing them — so a high rank means both signals rank high in the same area, not that they describe the same residents.
